This is an ideal time to continue and stimulate the natural development pathway that the growing child has been involved in since birth. The development of their basic locomotion and manipulative skills should flourish with their ability spontaneously ‘play’. Before a sedentary life gets the upper hand and physical literacy lessens this is the period where the young child can explore movement puzzles in a safe and creative way. The 5in5 is a useful tool for pre-school teachers and helpers as well as parents. At this age children have a very short attention span and the short time needed to explore individual movements or the block of 5 movements in the 5in5 is an appropriate intervention. This is the start of the journey to muscular-skeletal efficiency – one of the pillars of well-being.
